Sun Care and Safe Tanning

Posted by on August 15, 2011

The decreasing ozone layers in the golden horse shoe means exposure to potentially damaging and even dangerous sun rays.  Sun exposure can cause the skin to age prematurely, so it is best to avoid the sun to keep your skin looking young and healthy.  It is best to stay out of the sun during the times when the rays are strongest in the afternoon.  If you must be outside, wear protective clothing and sunscreen.  Damage from the sun is estimated to cause 90% of skin aging.

There are Safer Tanning Alternatives

The sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause skin damage, skin cancer and damage to the eye lens.  UVB rays can cause sunburn, skin cancer and premature aging.  UVA rays are also thought to cause skin cancer.   Wear sunglasses with UV protection to avoid damage to the eyes.  Clothing with UV ray/sunblock protection is also avilable, but tightly woven materials can also help protect the skin.  Children, especially need to be protected from the sun.  Much of the sun damage has happened by the time a person is 20.  Damage that has occurred over the years cannot be undone, and sunscreen used in childhood can prevent skin cancer later in life.  Be sure to apply sunscreens/sunblockers to children before they go into the sun, and reapply it after swimming.

Invest in a good sunscreen and apply it liberally before going outside.  Look for ones that work against both UVA and UVB rays.  The higher the SPF, the longer you will be able to stay outside without burning.  For example, and SPF of 30 means that if you normally burn after 30 minutes of exposure to the sun, it would take 30 times longer before you would get a sunburn.  If you are fair skinned or burn easily, a higher SPF is recommended.

If you get sunburned, you will feel like your skin is tight, painful, swollen and red.  Soaking in cool water and applying after sun creams or moisturizers will help ease the discomfort.  If you feel unwell, have nausea, dizziness, a rapid heartbeat, fever or clammy skin, you should seek immediate medical attention.  If you get a severe burn or skin blisters, see your doctor.

Hand Sprayed is bestWhile most people love the look of a tan, the potential for skin damage usually outweighs the benefits.  An alternative to tanning is a spray tan.  When applied by a trained esthetician by hand spray, the color can look natural and healthy and last for a week or two.   Fortelli Salon and Spa offers hand spray tanning in Oakville.  For spray tanning in Mississauga and Georgetown, visit Fortelli of Mississauga.
