Spring Gardening Tips for Oakville

Posted by on April 7, 2014

Yes, spring has finally sprung in Oakville after one of the worst winters in decades.  Those last snow icebergs are finally melting away and now the lawn is staring at us, screaming for care.  Take a deep breath of fresh spring air and plan your spring gardening routine.  Here are some handy tips to help you keep Oakville green.

Planting in the Spring

If flowers are planted too early, they may succumb to overnight frost conditions, so check out the weather channel and pick your planting time to assure maximum sunny days ahead.  Your garden center has a wide variety of thistles, daisies, snapdragons and primrose blooms along with colourful pansies and geraniums to get your garden looking great for the spring.  If you are planting trees or bushes, plant them in the later part of April or May since they need longer to take root than flowers.  Plant early when it comes to trees.  Plant herbs and veggies in the later part of April as well.

Gardening Tools

Being armed with the proper tools will make your job much easier.  For starters, a basic raking of the ground is needed to get rid of everything that has settled over the winter.

  • A good set of gardening gloves are essential to protect hands and fingers.
  • Big shovel and small shovel
  • Sheers or pruning tool
  • Weeding tool
  • Water Sprinkler – portable

Check out the traveling water sprinkler below for watering larger yards (this one travels up to 200 feet) or find one that suits your needs.  There are even sprinklers that double as scarecrows to protect your flower beds!

Enjoy the spring in your garden!
