Now that the kids in Oakville have headed back to school, many parents are looking for activities and sports that their kids can do in the after school hours. There is proof that extracurricular activities help school performance and grades. In a study published in the Sociology of Education, research found positive associations between academic achievement and extra curricular activities. Activities including band, sports, cheerleading, dance, etc. helped kids have more positive attitudes towards school as well as higher academic aspirations. Other studies indicate that physically active kids tend to show increased brain function and nourishment, improved self esteem and better concentration, allowing them to perform better in the classroom.
There are many wonderful clubs and businesses in Oakville that offer after school activities and sports. For those unable to afford lessons, the Oakville Youth Centre runs programs for teens aged 13-19 that are free. They are open most weekdays and Saturdays and offer after school programs including outdoor sports, indoor games, free internet and daily homework help. The Bronte Youth Centre is located at 2996 Lakeshore Road West and the Oakville Youth Centre is located at 177 Cross Avenue.
The Oakville fall/winter guide is also in print with activities and sports at the 3 main community centers, libraries, pools and arenas around town. Programs from martial arts to arts and crafts are available for the young and young at heart.
There are also plenty of great parks with play areas in Oakville. Why not get together with some neighbor kids and parents and head over to a local park for some fresh air and free fun? Or check with your child’s school to find out what teams and clubs are available outside of the regular school hours. Active kids are healthy (and apparently smarter) kids.
