As we are all becoming more conscious of where our food is grown and how far it travels, more and more Oakville families are looking for locally grown food. Not only is it healthier for us, it supports the local farmers and economy. While many grocery stores stock locally grown produce, there are farmers markets where you can buy goods directly from the grower. Some of our favourites:
Harbourside Organic Farmers’ Market
This organic farmer’s market is open from June through October from 9.30 AM – 2 PM. It is located downtown in Centennial Plaza (square) beside the Oakville Public Library/Oakville Centre for Performing Arts on the North/East corner of Lakeshore and Navy.
Hopedale / Civitan Farmer’s Market
Held every Saturday from 8 AM to 2:30 PM, this farmer’s market is located in the parking lot of the Hopedale Mall – on the corner of Third Line and Rebecca in Oakville. This non profit market is run by the Civitan Club of Oakville. Proceeds from the stall rentals support local charities. From the first Saturday of May to the last Saturday of November, you can buy fruits and vegetables, as well as cheese, eggs, meats, bakery items and maple syrup. In addition to foods, plants and flowers to beautify your home are also available.
Unfortunately, the Kerr Village Farmers Market is no longer open on Saturdays. The market closed for 2011 due to the increasing popularity of farmer’s markets across the province of Ontario.
Enjoy our local foods and happy shopping!
